Fence cost guide
Chain link fence cost: materials, rolls and parts
Start with the fabric length, then count posts, top rail and terminal hardware. A fabric roll alone is only one part of a chain link fence.

How the price is calculated
Fence cost = the selected per-foot rate × total entered length, including gate openings. Gate charges are separate when a matching sourced price is available. Permits, removal, tax and delivery are excluded. Installed rates already include materials and labor. No gate charges are added. Height and style change counts, not the per-foot rate.
Planning quantities, excluding special hardware. Confirm the layout before ordering.
Fence layout
- End posts 2
- Corner posts 0
- Line posts 18
- Gate posts 0
Each side uses the same scale. Shared corner posts appear on both adjoining rows and count once. Gates split each side into equal runs; each run uses equal bays no wider than your post spacing.
Chain link material price per foot
Use a material-only rate for the fence run and keep gate materials separate. Match the height, mesh gauge and coating when comparing a kit with individual parts. The estimator uses open mesh; privacy slats are outside its material list.
Rolls and kits: check what is in the package
The quantity estimate divides fabric into 50 ft rolls and rounds up. A shorter last run can leave an offcut. Confirm the roll length on the product you select; a different roll size changes how many packages you need.
A kit may include line posts while leaving terminal posts, a gate or concrete to be ordered separately. Compare its packing list with your layout. Corners and fence ends need terminal fittings, including tension bars and bands, that a simple fabric-foot total does not count.
Build a parts list by post type
Mark ends, corners and gate openings on a drawing. Count the terminal posts and their fittings first, then fill the straight runs with line posts. Top rail spans in the calculator are layout bays, not a count of stock-length tubes; check rail lengths, sleeves and cuts with the supplier.
Materials versus an installed fence
| Item | Range (USD) | Source | What it covers | Checked |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Chain link installed | $13–$27 per linear foot, installed | Fixr | 4 ft, 9 ga galvanized fence with 2 in diamond mesh; materials and installation. Page updated January 2025. | |
| Chain link labor | $10–$20 per linear foot, labor | Fixr | Chain link installation labor, per linear foot. | |
| Chain link installed — comparison | $8–$40 per linear foot, installed | Angi | Broad residential chain link installed range. | |
| Chain link installed — premium configuration | $29.08–$44.84 per linear foot, installed | Homewyse Premium configuration reference | Premium configuration: 6 ft, 12.5 ga galvanized fabric and 16 ga posts; labor, supplies, equipment and delivery bundled. May 2026 estimate. |
Retail parts do not include digging, stretching fabric or hanging the gate. Use the chain link fence installation cost guide to compare the labor scope with a material-only order.
Chain link material budgets by fence length
Use the material column when planning a retail order. Fixr's saved material rate covers fabric, posts, hardware and top rail; it is not a fabric-only rate. The installed column is a scope comparison, not a second package of parts to add to the material total.
| Length | Materials only | Installed fence run |
|---|---|---|
| 100 ft | $300–$700 | $1,300–$2,700 |
| 150 ft | $450–$1,050 | $1,950–$4,050 |
| 200 ft | $600–$1,400 | $2,600–$5,400 |

Turn a roll price into a complete shopping list
Lay out the fence before choosing a roll or kit. A long unbroken side, several short returns and a gated opening can have the same total footage but different terminal hardware needs. Give the counter staff a drawing showing every fence end, corner and opening, then have them mark which pieces come in the package and which must be bought separately.
| Part group | What to check at the store |
|---|---|
| Fabric | Height, roll length, wire gauge, mesh opening and coating; check matching repair or splice materials. |
| Line posts | Post dimensions, caps and rail connections for the selected system. |
| Terminal posts | Ends, corners and gate supports, with their specified bands, bars and braces. |
| Top rail | Stock lengths, joints and end connections; bay spans are not stock tube counts. |
| Fastening and tensioning | Ties and terminal fittings; a fabric roll does not establish quantities for these. |
| Gate and footings | Gate leaf, compatible hardware, supports and the concrete required by the post-setting detail. |
Gauge and coating: compare the same specification
The saved installed reference describes 4 ft, 9 ga galvanized fence with 2 in diamond mesh; materials and installation. Page updated January 2025. Use that specification to understand the reference, not as a universal product recommendation. Write the proposed wire gauge, mesh opening and finish on your shopping list so a replacement roll or competing kit can be checked against it.
If you want a coated system, check the finish on posts, top rail and fittings as well as the fabric. Ask the seller how the wire gauge is described for the chosen product and whether it refers to the metal core. A photograph of a dark fence does not establish which coated parts are included. Compare the labeled specifications; the roll price alone does not establish the grade.
Worked fabric-order example
The default model divides fabric into 50 ft rolls. On an illustrative gate-free 150 ft side, it calls for 3 rolls. Splitting the job into separate sides can change the rounded roll count; the tool does not optimize offcuts across sides. A gate reduces fabric footage, while terminal posts and gate parts still need their own count.
Roll-size reference: Merchants Metals fabric specifications at Lowe's. This supports the example roll length, not every product's package size or the price range. Verify the selected roll before ordering.
Do not price a privacy conversion as plain mesh
Slats or screening are additional products. The open-mesh fabric estimate does not count them or confirm that the post and footing design suits the proposed screen. Ask the fence-system supplier to review the change before buying infill for an existing fence. If you want a solid boundary from the start, compare a designed wood or vinyl privacy fence as a separate option.
DIY purchases and installer-supplied parts
If you will install the fence, include tool rental and the complete terminal-hardware list in your shopping budget. If a contractor will install your parts, send the product list before ordering. Agree who checks compatibility and who pays for return trips if a fitting is missing. Keep delivery, returns and unused material terms with the order.
A cheap fabric roll can be a useful replacement purchase when the existing compatible structure is staying. It is not a complete new-fence comparison. For a new installation, compare complete parts lists at the same length and height; use the separate installation guide when comparing digging and assembly labor.
Common questions
Does the fabric roll price cover the whole fence?
No. Posts, top rail, tension hardware, ties, concrete and gates need to be checked separately. A kit is only comparable once you know which of those parts it includes.
Can I use the privacy setting for chain link?
The chain link estimate always counts open mesh. Privacy slats or screening require a separate product list and a check that the fence can handle the added wind load.
Does the material range include labor?
No. The material range uses total entered length and adds sourced gate materials when available. Installation uses its own range; permits, removal, tax and delivery remain outside the estimator.
