How we work out prices
Every dollar figure on the site comes from one shared price file. Each price record has a named source, a link to the source page and the date we checked it. Cost estimates use those recorded values and the measurements you enter. The sources we currently use are:
We keep material-only ranges separate from installed ranges. Installed rates already include materials and labor, so they are not an extra labor charge to add to the material estimate. The cost guides explain what a range covers, including differences in fence style, height or the work included by a source.
We do not provide local contractor quotes or ZIP-based pricing yet. Published ranges cannot account for every site's access, ground conditions or local requirements. Read the inclusions and exclusions alongside a result before using it to compare a material order or a contractor's quote.
How we check the maths
The pages write out the formulas behind the results. Worked examples are computed from the same code as the calculators, so an example and an interactive result follow the same calculation. The code also has automated tests that check calculations and input handling.
The results are planning estimates. They are not engineering advice, a property survey or code approval. Check your measurements and the product dimensions you intend to use, and confirm property boundaries and local building requirements before construction.
Updates
Pages show a last-updated date, which changes when the page content changes. Price records carry their own checked dates. When a source changes, we update the affected value and its checked date in the shared price file so pages using that record use the same data.
Money
The site is free to use. We do not sell fencing, and no contractor or manufacturer pays us to appear in or change a result. If a page ever includes affiliate links or sponsored placements, that page will say so.
